Keys to Developing Higher Education Breakthrough Models

Abstract

Much has been written about the transformation taking place in higher education and the need for models that support an educational experience that is more accessible while also being more affordable. Another desirable characteristic of new models is their ability to support student learning through diverse, robust support structures that may include coaches, tutors, and advisors along with the effective use of technology. In July 2013, EDUCAUSE launched the inaugural Breakthrough Models Academy (BMA) to address these issues, and several useful ideas emerged. The BMA program was aimed at supporting participants’ innovative thinking, the development of new models, and ways to approach implementation and piloting. This paper shares those approaches and tools that can support leaders and institutions in innovating with the creative use of technology and resources.
