Abstract
Presentation at the 2009 EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR) Symposium, December 3, 2009, in Carlsbad, California, by Drue Reeves, Vice President and Research Director for Burton Group Data Center Strategies. Cloud computing is changing the way we think of IT -- from economics to process and usage models. Many organizations look to the cloud as a potential cost-savings boon by moving internally hosted IT services to external providers.
Other IT organizations view the cloud as a potential disaster recovery plan or as on-demand capacity to boost business continuity and customer service levels.
Cloud computing suffers from confusion and hype. Multiple definitions, competing vendor offerings, undefined risks, and new business models obscure cloud computing, slowing down adoption. Insightful IT organizations are taking a closer look, discerning what the cloud is and how they can use it to create a competitive advantage. This session defines the cloud and its characteristics, potential usages, and key players, and it frames a tiered architecture that includes:

- IT advantages and usage
- Cloud risks and concerns
- Cloud adoption recommendations
- Cloud vendor categorization
